# Loading zone

The loading zone is a temporary location in the file system where files are stored before being uploaded into PageSeeder.

Loading zones are automatically created whenever a [member](/reference/glossary/member.md) intends to upload content into a PageSeeder [group](/reference/glossary/group.md).

## Why a loading zone

Having a temporary space to hold files to upload allows members to:

- Upload a whole collection of [documents](/reference/glossary/document.md) at once.
- Preserve and verify the integrity of the linking ([cross-references](/reference/glossary/cross_reference.md)) between files.
- Remove and manage the list and organization of files to upload.
- Set individual upload options for each file.
- Test import function and tweak the options.

For example, when importing a [Microsoft Word DOCX document](/reference/glossary/word_docx_format.md) into PageSeeder as a [PSML](/reference/glossary/psml.md) document, the loading zone allows members to select the best options for splitting the file.
