# Edit note

An edit note is a particular type of [XLink](/reference/glossary/xlink.md) (a note) attached to a specific change in a [fragment](/reference/glossary/section.md) (an edit).

The purpose of edit notes is to explain the reason for the change in the [document](/reference/glossary/document.md). For example, if a document was edited to address a typographical error, an edit note can be made to mention this.

Edit notes appear to the right of the edited fragment when viewing a document. They are also displayed when viewing the change history of the fragment.

Although they are attached to document fragments, unlike comments, they don’t persist after the fragment has been edited.
