# Built-in document types

PageSeeder comes preconfigured with three [document types](/reference/glossary/document_type.md):

- [References](/reference/glossary/references_document.md) – this type of document can be used to assemble documents together into a [publication](/reference/glossary/publications.md). It also has a marker for generating a [table of contents](/reference/glossary/table_of_contents.md).
- **Default** – this type is a basic document with a title and content [section](/reference/glossary/section.md). It also acts as a source of configuration values that other types can either override or inherit. 
- **Help** – use this type for **help articles** that display in a panel. They can be associated to one or more pages or document types.
